Redfern Nights is TEChSLo’s newest release since Mountain Side (2018, GOS). The release pays homage to Redfern, a diverse suburb of inner-city Sydney where the artist lived and made work for over a decade.

Created in a studio overlooking the main street, TEChSLo spent many late nights processing rainy field recordings, synths, basslines and drums to cassette tape to get the appropriate lo-fi grainy texture to fit the grit of Redfern. The sounds on this release begin in the artist's former dub-techno palette and then extend into more ambient, minimal terrains.

There is a thick-skinned, street-smart quality that develops when living in such locations. The changing face of Redfern amid ongoing gentrification makes for an often strained and uncertain everyday life. Alcohol and drug abuse, and the resulting violence and public disputes are just a part of the landscape. The community is diverse, empathetic and accepting of the fact that daily life can be intense and often unpredictably violent.

Redfern Nights captures both this omnipresent tension and the cold rainy immersion of the winter of 2018. The release includes two remixes, titled “reductions.” It is within these more ambient tracks that we see TEChSLo using sound as a vehicle for rest and respite from the inner city realities.

Redfern Nights is written as an ode to the neighbourhood of Redfern, a record for friends still in the “fern”, and for people in all inner-city environments that need a form of sonic escape, conversation or balance.
